The first waves hit the Big Island of Hawaii around noon (5 pm ET), the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said. Gauges were showing water levels at 3 feet in Hilo. More waves were expected. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage. Warning sirens had sounded in Hawaii at 6 am (11 am ET). Tsunamis can travel at 400 to 500 mph -- the speed of a jet plane, said Georgia Tech geology professor Kurt Frankel. A large wave killed three people and 10 were missing on the island of Juan Fernandez, 400 miles (643 km) off the coast of Chile, said Provincial Governor Ivan De La Maza. On mainland Chile, the task of trying to save survivors and recover the dead was fully under way. Buildings lay in rubble, bridges and highway overpasses were toppled and roads buckled like rumpled paper. Mangled cars were strewn on several highways, many of the vehicles coming to rest on their roofs. The media room for the visiting football teams is about the size of a big garage. The shed cannot lock because the key was broken off in the lock several years ago. The media room was not locked. I was not involved in checking on the player in either place. I do not know how often the athlete was checked on by another athletic trainer. I do not know if the player had his cell phone on him in either places. An athlete with a concussion will have headaches and be sensitive to light (photophobia). We also have the athlete not lift weights and take it easy and not to stress their bodies and only take Tylenol by mouth for the headaches.
