Dell, Whole Foods, National Instruments and even companies like Sweet Leaf Tea were created in Austin, and there’s an ever-increasing amount of resources devoted to making Austin a home for entrepreneurs the way it’s already a home for live music. The Spark That Could Ignite Web M&A
Six months ago, it looked like mergers and acquisitions were heating up again. Om thought it was good news for startups , while I fretted about companies being pressured to make deals that didn’t make strategic sense. I needn’t have worried. After the usual end-of-year lull, deals are starting to be made again. And no sector is riper for deal-making...

If you live in New York City or in any of the heavily populated and wealthy areas of the Northeast, you likely have access to some of the fastest broadband speeds available in the country. If you live in a suburb of Austin , Texas, however, you’re offered speeds some six times slower for about half the price. And as the technologies race...

Spotify Aims to Offer 360-Degree Services for Online Music
In music industry parlance, the “ 360 deal ” is a type of record contract that emerged over the past decade in which the record label takes a cut of live music ticketing and merchandise sales as well as recorded music revenues. Here is a short (and by no means a complete) list of ten articles that encapsulate the art of the start-up. Most were published during 2009 and I found them educational and full of practical tips that we have applied to our business. They have...
As Always, Mobile Music Faces Uncertain Future
As Always, Mobile Music Faces Uncertain Future
A slew of recent headlines about cloud-based services have revitalized a mobile music space that has long failed to live up to ridiculous hype. The NPD Group last week reported that an amazing seven or eight million iTunes users would pay $10 a month for a cloud music service that gave them to access their music libraries across devices and platforms....

Smaller Startups to Fuel M&A Fire in Mobile Ads This Year
The mobile ad space continued to heat up last week with Amobee’s acquisition of RingRing Media, a 2-year-old London-based startup, for an undisclosed sum. The move surely isn’t anywhere near the magnitude of Google’s $750 million AdMob buy or even Apple’s $275 million pick-up of Quattro Wireless , but it’s the kind...

I start each day by working out, but today, I made an exception –- I woke up and tuned into the live feed of TechCrunch Disrupt . I was hoping to see what one of my favorite Silicon Valley people had to say — John Doerr, who somehow has a way of encapsulating an era, a trend or a combination of technologies with just a few succinct words....
