It’s now been eight years since I wrote the first post on the blog version of GigaOM. Up until Dec. 13, 2001, GigaOM was nothing more than a repository for my previously published articles and résumé. But with a little help from Ben Trott, co-creator of Movable Type (and co-founder of Six Apart), I turned GigaOM into a two-way conversation with like-minded people. Eight years later, the tools are different and the stage is larger, but the conversation continues. Thanks to residual jet lag from my Le Web trip , I woke up in the middle of the night last night and started reflecting on…

Just prior to the Consumer Electronics Show, I was asked to participate in a collaborative mobile trends effort. The results are out and I’m honored to be in such good company — over four dozen people participated and I’m not at all shy to say that most of them are far smarter than me. Each of us was asked to identify and briefly...
It goes without saying that I spend an inordinate (and sometimes ungodly) amount of time online, reading and consuming content. Whether it is news reports, opinions or simple musings on blogs, I love the written word. From Apartment Therapy to UI musings of some of my dear friends, I view reading online as a way of constantly stuffing my brain...
Adult Internet users were spending close to 13 hours a week online in 2009, according to a poll conducted by Harris Interactive , a New York-based market research company. In comparison, U.S. adults used the Internet for about seven hours a week in 1999. The number of adults online in the U.S. has grown to 184 million, compared with 113 million...
Yes Virginia, there really is a Google Phone! And no, I don’t mean all those Android-powered devices, but instead a Google-branded phone that is made by an original equipment maker. The company has started giving away these devices to its employees , who started tweeting about it last night, and the company had to make an announcement this...
Copenhagen, Denmark: Danish people have a unique feeling called “hygge,” which is commonly described as warmth or cosiness. It can often be found indoors, when the conversation flows and warm (or alcoholic) beverages are involved, and it’s a way to cheer-up and connect with others in the long, cold dark winters of Denmark (and...
VigLink is launching today a service to help publishers take advantage of affiliate marketing offerings for sites they already link to in their normal course of writing. While many site owners may be aware that Amazon will send them a cut of revenue when they refer purchasers, just about every other e-commerce and subscription service from The...
When I first started out in web journalism, my boss ordered me to read two publications religiously if I ever wanted to be any good at writing. The first was the news summary section of the Wall Street Journal (paper edition!) and the second was Dave Pell’s Davenetics email newsletter. Dell’s crisp, witty chronicling of the dot-com...
“Boy, you have a lot of apps,” my wife said after looking at my iPhone the other night. I told her I was waiting till I reached 100, at which point I planned to delete many of them. But it turned out I was already at 137. My iPhone was suffering an acute case of app creep. By app creep, I mean the collecting (and then forgetting) of software...
I start each day by working out, but today, I made an exception –- I woke up and tuned into the live feed of TechCrunch Disrupt . I was hoping to see what one of my favorite Silicon Valley people had to say — John Doerr, who somehow has a way of encapsulating an era, a trend or a combination of technologies with just a few succinct words....
GameHouse , the casual games division of RealNetworks, couldn’t wait until the Social Games Summit kicked off today in San Francisco to announce plans to push further into the social space with its Fusion platform and Facebook app. And shortly after it unveiled them, Craig Robinson, VP of product management at Real’s games division,...
