8 Years Later, the Blogging Goes On

December 14th, 2009 admin

It’s now been eight years since I wrote the first post on the blog version of GigaOM. Up until Dec. 13, 2001, GigaOM was nothing more than a repository for my previously published articles and résumé.  But with a little help from Ben Trott, co-creator of Movable Type (and co-founder of Six Apart), I turned GigaOM into a two-way conversation with like-minded people. Eight years later, the tools are different and the stage is larger, but the conversation continues. Thanks to residual jet lag from my Le Web trip , I woke up in the middle of the night last night and started reflecting on…

Mobile Trends for the Next 10 Years
Just prior to the Consumer Electronics Show, I was asked to participate in a collaborative mobile trends effort. The results are out and I’m honored to be in such good company — over four dozen people participated and I’m not at all shy to say that most of them are far smarter than me. Each of us was asked to identify and briefly...
So the Google Phone Is Real
So the Google Phone Is Real
Yes Virginia, there really is a Google Phone! And no, I don’t mean all those Android-powered devices, but instead a Google-branded phone that is made by an original equipment maker. The company has started giving away these devices to its employees , who started tweeting about it last night, and the company had to make an announcement this...

In 10 Years, Hours Spent on Internet Almost Doubled
Adult Internet users were spending close to 13 hours a week online in 2009, according to a poll conducted by Harris Interactive , a New York-based market research company. In comparison, U.S. adults used the Internet for about seven hours a week in 1999. The number of adults online in the U.S. has grown to 184 million, compared with 113 million...

VigLink Finds a New Way to Make Blogging Pay
VigLink is launching today a service to help publishers take advantage of affiliate marketing offerings for sites they already link to in their normal course of writing. While many site owners may be aware that Amazon will send them a cut of revenue when they refer purchasers, just about every other e-commerce and subscription service from The...
Notes from Copenhagen: A Bit of Warmth Amidst the Cold
Notes from Copenhagen: A Bit of Warmth Amidst the Cold
Copenhagen, Denmark: Danish people have a unique feeling called “hygge,” which is commonly described as warmth or cosiness. It can often be found indoors, when the conversation flows and warm (or alcoholic) beverages are involved, and it’s a way to cheer-up and connect with others in the long, cold dark winters of Denmark (and...
My Early Impressions of Apple’s iPad & a Quick Hands-on Review
My Early Impressions of Apple’s iPad & a Quick Hands-on Review
For a long time, the world has been searching for a device whose capabilities and design place it right smack in the middle of a phone and a laptop. But while some have argued that netbooks were the answer, to me they’re nothing more than cheap laptops. Today, that third device came out of stealth, thanks to Apple. It’s essentially...
Admit It, Microsoft: You Suck at the Web
Admit It, Microsoft: You Suck at the Web
Microsoft is many things, but one thing it’s not is a successful web company. And it’s time Redmond faced up to that. For 15 years, Microsoft has tried time and again to become a major player on the web. It started by integrating an AOL-like dial-up content service in Windows 95. It shifted to a Yahoo-like web portal model three years later....
All I Want For Christmas Is My Web
All I Want For Christmas Is My Web
I’m not really comfortable making broad technology predictions, but I’ve run across two things recently that perfectly illustrate for me the next generation of the web.  Some of us are already living it — those of us that use offerings like Twitter or Hunch, or any service that instead of forcing us to search for information...

Does Augmented Reality Need a Dedicated Device?
Augmented reality — the idea of overlaying relevant digital information on top of a view of the real world — is, in a word, futuristic. And while many people are excited about it, many are turned off by all this fuss with not much to show for it . Out of concern that early and incomplete AR demo products make a bad name for the technology,...

12+1 Signs That You Have Founderitis
Thanks to my recent travels, which took me from San Francisco to Munich to LA and back again — all in less than a week — I got to thinking about the past four years. It’s been nearly that long since I first started working on GigaOM, the business, and thus crossed over to becoming a founder. The role of a startup founder is a...
