Tying Up Loose Ends: Microsoft, Yahoo, Nortel & Avaya

December 4th, 2009 admin

Minutes after the U.S. stock markets started winding down for the weekend, a few technology giants made some announcements that amount to nothing more than tying up loose ends. Avaya got the go-ahead from Canada to buy Nortel’s PBX business for $900 million in cash. Microsoft & Yahoo finalized their search agreement that was first announced back in July . It’s a good way for the two companies to put yesterday’s Bing debacle behind them! Photo courtesy of Microsoft .

How Google, Yahoo and Microsoft Think About Real-Time Search
Perhaps inspired by the speed of the medium, the integration of real-time tweets and other updates into major search engines has happened more quickly than I might have expected. It’s pretty amazing that raw Twitter posts already show up by default right on Google search results pages (they’re a little more buried on Bing and Yahoo...
Admit It, Microsoft: You Suck at the Web
Admit It, Microsoft: You Suck at the Web
Microsoft is many things, but one thing it’s not is a successful web company. And it’s time Redmond faced up to that. For 15 years, Microsoft has tried time and again to become a major player on the web. It started by integrating an AOL-like dial-up content service in Windows 95. It shifted to a Yahoo-like web portal model three years later....

New Yahoo CTO Raymie Stata on Relevance, Apps vs. Web and Social
Before Raymie Stata was named Yahoo CTO today, he stopped by our office for a broad discussion (we didn’t know at the time about his impending promotion). When he first joined the company in 2004, Stata started off by focusing on search and later incorporated work on advertising before being named chief architect early last year. Stata won...

As Yahoo Compares Itself to TV, Content Acquisitions on the Way
Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz trumpeted the comeback of display advertising on the company’s fourth-quarter call with analysts today by saying: “Frankly, our competition is television.” Yahoo’s display revenue grew 26 percent on a sequential basis, to $503 million, down just 1 percent from the same three-month period a year ago....
Bing Becoming Search in Name Only
Bing Becoming Search in Name Only
With Google having tied up the search market, Microsoft is redefining the category to include browsing and discovery. Executives at a press conference in San Francisco today presented Bing as a portal that organizes information to anticipate what users may want to know and decide. Bing wants users to “browse to your intent rather than trying...

Mainstream Commenters Choose Yahoo Logins
When given a choice of login systems, visitors to mainstream media properties such as Slate, Forbes, Newsweek, Discovery, Time and Press Enterprise are most likely to choose Yahoo, according to data collected by commenting system Echo , which helps power such sites. Over three months of login data on Echo’s 10 publishers, 34 percent of users...

Why Microsoft’s PC-Inspired Cloud Strategy Might Work
I wrote a few weeks ago that “Microsoft taught the world how to succeed in PC and business software, but it might [be] teaching the world how to not succeed in cloud computing” However, that’s a fate it could avoid if it just delivered on a clear vision. As I point out in my weekly column for GigaOM Pro, it looks like Microsoft has decided...

Microsoft Previews Spindex, a Social Media Tracking Tool
Instead of one-size-fits-all search, what if you could do “your own personal index, archiving your own information for yourself that’s private, and you could possibly also share?” asked Lili Cheng, who leads the Future Social Experiments Lab at Microsoft, speaking at the Web 2.0 Expo. She answered her question with a preview...

Hands-on First Impressions of Microsoft’s Kin Phones
Microsoft  today launched a line-up of mobile devices called Kin . I attended the...

Facebook Search Queries Jump 10% in February
Facebook redesigned at the beginning of February, moving its search box from the right side to the top middle of its home page, and it seems to have paid off, with the company’s U.S. search queries growing 10 percent in February, according to new data released today by comScore . That’s a significant one-month jump, and it’s...
