Skype , a big proponent of open networks and net neutrality, in a filing today with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) argued that net neutrality was “about growing the broadband ecosystem and preserving a borderless, open Internet” and it would “promote investment, jobs and innovation.” The company said that it...

10 Tips for Becoming a Smarter, Social Business Person
The web is filled with social networks: We have Twitter for meeting new people, Facebook for old college buddies, and Bebo for those of us who don’t want to hang out with the mainstream. Those social networks are rarely viewed as corporate services — they’re relaxing at the end of a long workday, not playgrounds for more business...

What Rupert Murdoch Still Doesn’t Get About the Internet
Rupert Murdoch knows who’s winning the war between big media and the Internet. Unsurprisingly, it’s Rupert Murdoch. “Without content, the ever-larger and flatter screens, the tablets, the e-readers and the increasingly sophisticated mobile phones would be lifeless,” he proclaimed when News Corp. posted unexpectedly strong fiscal...

Is Bandwidth.com the Future of VoIP and Voice?
Bandwidth.com, despite having a name only a late ’90s investor could love, has built a profitable all-IP network and expects to bring in $85 million in sales this year. Today it also is announcing that it’s opening up its network as a platform for any business that wants to build out a voice over IP service — and it sees voice...

Why Every ISP Needs a Fiber-to-the-Home Network
Even though we’re inching ever-closer towards consumption-based broadband , not all ISPs are implementing metered or tiered plans as a way to punish users who clog their pipes. For example, Verizon plans to one day move to a consumption-based model as a way to generate additional revenue, not because of any network constraint. Brian Whitton,...

NYC Still Hearts the Net
The New York City Council is voting on a resolution this morning supporting the idea that Internet service providers cannot discriminate against web traffic on their networks. As gestures go, this resolution supporting net neutrality is more symbolic than it is useful, and to that end has already yielded a couple of photos of FCC Chairman Julius...

How the Internet Changed Writing in the 2000s
In a famous passage from Ulysses , James Joyce recapitulates the development of the English language in 45 pages — from the archaic and formal (“Deshil Holles Eamus”) to the conversationally casual (“Pflaap! Pflaap! Blaze on”). Over the past decade, as more people have spent more time writing on the Internet, that same evolution...

Where On Earth Is the Online Video Arbitrage Model?
On the text web, arbitrage has become the word of the day as whole ecosystems have sprung up to optimize and monetize the link economy.  But when it comes to online video, the arbitrage model is failing badly. Whether it’s buying a keyword for a buck, and making $1.02 on each visit, or buying a shopping link for a quarter and making a product...

Google, the Internet and Civil Disobedience As a Business Strategy
Everyone, it seemed, had a strong reaction to Google’s decision this week to stop censoring its search results on Google.cn. Some were impressed with its moral stan ce ; some found it to be too little, too late ; and still others viewed it as a cynical move . Maybe I’ve been writing about the business world for too long, but my first thought...
