Green Computing Needs a Data Center Whisperer

November 20th, 2009 admin

As compute demand increases, demand for power in data centers is soaring. To help IT professionals halt the spread of watt-consuming servers, the industry needs to develop software that can communicate the ways in which the various layers of the data center perform and interact. They need a binary version of Cesar Millan — a data center whisperer. Speaking at a panel held Wednesday night in Austin, Texas , several folks from the large server shops and a distinguished engineer who runs a data center for IBM spoke about the challenges of keeping power consumption down in a world where computing demand is going up. Why Every ISP Needs a Fiber-to-the-Home Network
Even though we’re inching ever-closer towards consumption-based broadband , not all ISPs are implementing metered or tiered plans as a way to punish users who clog their pipes. For example, Verizon plans to one day move to a consumption-based model as a way to generate additional revenue, not because of any network constraint. Brian Whitton,...

How Much 3G Data Is Your Smartphone Using?
I don’t often look at my cellular phone bills, but I happened to glance at the latest one from T-Mobile. My first full monthly billing cycle didn’t show anything out of the ordinary, but the monthly data usage happened to catch my eye. I thought I chewed up more than 437 MB of mobile broadband, but I’m sure that T-Mobile keeps...

Can Austin Ignite the Fire of Entrepreneurship?
I recently attended, as part of an overall effort to get out around town more (and away from my desk), Ignite Austin , an event that gives people five minutes and 20 slides to share an idea, and left jazzed about Austin’s future as a place for entrepreneurs. No, it’s not a stellar place to find venture capital , but it’s a great...
